Months before The Queen’s Gambit aired on Netflix, Interior Designer, Lauren Rosenberg began a townhome design overlooking the Sonoran Desert for a gentleman client in Scottsdale, Arizona.
This Scottsdale resident happens to be an avid chess player and renowned chess expert. You might say that his entire life revolves around the game of chess.
Because of her client’s passion for chess, it was Rosenberg’s intent to create a custom-designed, masculine interior for his townhome. A townhome design that reflected his passion for the game of chess.
Rosenberg selected a black and white graphic fabric that bears a resemblance to chess pawns for the great room. The fabric was applied to the backs of the comfortable high-backed upholstered chairs along with throw pillows.
The same fabric was used on the upholstered seat cushions of rattan backed chairs in an intimate corner of the space, specifically designed for chess partners to get lost in the game at a specially curated chess table.
Chess has ebbed and waned over the years in popularity. Thanks to the highly popular Netflix series, chess has recently seen a resurgence with new players spanning the globe. Not surprisingly, Chess.com added 13 million new members to their site!
Rosenberg combined a mix of finishes that include wood, fabric, leather, iron, rattan, marble, and chrome. All blend beautifully with one another for a finished look that can be described as modern, industrial, clean, and timeless.
